History of the Department
The Department of Arts Education came into existence in August 2013 when it was carved out of the former Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education. Similarly the Department of Social Sciences Education came into existence as a result of the splitting of the former Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education into the Department of Arts Education and Social Sciences Education in August 2013.
The former Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education was in existence from 2005 was carved out of the former Departments of Educational Foundations; and Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology (CSET) in 2005 - 2013. Before Educational Foundations Department and Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology Department was Teacher Education Department which was the first Department in the Faculty of Education (1978 – 1981).
Arts Education Department is currently responsible for 7 B.A Ed. Programmes including Arabic, Christian Studies, English, French, History, Islamic Studies, Yoruba and 1 B.Ed. programme in Primary Education.
At the Postgraduate level, the Department offers courses leading to M.Ed. and Ph.D. Degrees in the following programmes: Arabic Education, Comparative Education, Curriculum Studies, English Language Education, History and Policy of Education, Mother Tongue (Yoruba) Education, Philosophy of Education, Reglious and Moral Education. All the programmes are through teaching and research.
